Palm Beach County Author Gives Valuable Insight into Cold War Years
Former Air Force fighter pilot Ron Standerfer pens “The Eagle’s Last Flight”
GULF STREAM, Fla.– Experience military life during the Cold War as seen through the eyes of a strong-willed, resourceful fighter pilot in Ron Standerfer’s book, “The Eagle’s Last Flight: A Fighter Pilot’s Story.”
Taking inspiration from his own life, Standerfer tells the story of Skip O’Neill, an Air Force fighter pilot who, though he appeared to be an ordinary young man, was destined to live an extraordinary life.
Skip was just 22 when he volunteered to participate in an atomic test. He was certain the government would not put him in harm’s way, but he was wrong. After serving his country with courage and honor for 27 years (1954 – 1981), Skip learned that he was dying of leukemia.
True-to-life and filled with realistic dialogue and relatable characters, “The Eagle’s Last Flight” will appeal to a broad audience as it pays homage to the brave men and women of the Air Force.
Praise for “The Eagle’s Last Flight”:
“This is one of the best books about flying fighters, life in the military, war and the humans who do it, all with the best of characters shrouded in history, mixed with realism, sex, joy, tragedy, sadness, mystery. I could feel the Gs, taste the martinis and smell the perfume. I felt like I knew the characters, or someone just like them, and saw every fighter pilot in ‘Skip’ and every fighter pilot’s wife in ‘Christy.’”
—Former CNN military analyst and author, Major General Don Shepherd, USAF (Ret.)
